Stained Glass Window Tour: The Nativity Window
[because of size, perhaps above the text instead of to the left?]
At the back of the church, over the balcony.
The story of the window is told in a large scene, small vignettes and symbols. The central scene is the Nativity: the Holy Family in the stable with the shepherds adoring the child Jesus (Luke 2:1-20). Above this is the angel that gave the message “to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.”
To the left of the central scene on smaller scale is the annunciation of Gabriel to Mary, saying that she will bear a child who will be the Messiah (Luke 1:26-35). On the right is the flight to Egypt of the Holy family, where they escape from Herod’s order to murder all the infant boys in Bethlehem (Matt 2:14-15). Above the scene, pyramids identify their destination.
The outer edges of the window contain symbols that help to tell the story. Starting at the center left above the Annunciation, the combined M and R form a symbol for the Virgin Mary. Above this is the heraldic rose, another traditional symbol of Mary. Crossing to the right side at the top is an open book, the Bible, where the story is found. Clustered in the group of angels are two doves, that were offered as a ransom for the firstborn son when Jesus was presented at the Temple (Luke 2:22-24).
Across the bottom of the window are two flowers, the Christmas rose, and a daisy that symbolizes both the Christ child and the purity of Mary.
Given in praise and thanksgiving to God by Mr. & Mrs. Fred Hughes, Jr, Sarah & Lilly Hughes, to honor to their parents and grandparents, Mr & Mrs. Joseph Warren Coleman, Sr., and Mr & Mrs. Fred Hughes, Sr.
